About Ride Astride

Welcome!

Ride Astride is a free motorcycle reference resource for riders new and old.

Starting life as The 250cc Bike List, this site also offers a reference database of bike models and details to assist new riders and enthusiasts.

The original list was formed in 1994, built out of content teased out of online discussion news groups to provide an information source because:

• many learner motorcycle laws around the world limit new riders to sub-250cc classes, or at least limit the power/weight ratio to around this size.
• with spiralling petrol prices many people are turning to scooters and smaller motorcycles for commuting
• there are some very exciting bikes in this class (on and off-road!)

So the 250cc Bike List started life in the early 1990s as a flat file compilation of motorcycle models. As it grew in size it was posted relatively regularly to the Usenet newsgroup aus.motorcycles. At some point the most excellent John Lamp began hosting the list for me and formatted it nicely in HTML.

In 1999 the domain 250ccbikes.com was registered and the site came to life.
